We are writing this blog to keep our friends up to date on our travels, and perhaps to inspire and inform similar adventures. We are grateful to those who have chosen to join us along the way. Personally, I am taking a sabbatical from painting to find new inspiration.

Never having had traveled to Europe in college,  John and I decided to take a bold move this year (2024) and undertake a semester abroad. The idea was hatched when we met Tia and John, neighbor-friends who did a Sebatical.com rental on our Connecticut shoreline, but they had the reverse of our plan. They rented during the fall and spring and decamped to Europe for the summer months. With our proximity to Yale, our home finished in gracious style thanks to John’s and my 13 years of hard work, our mobility in our 60’s, and the loss of our beloved Beau, the time was right. I posted Driftwood on Sabattical.com, where it reposed for months. The criteria were stiff. Then along came the perfect couple; she a professor from Australia teaching for a semester at the Yale Law school.

Gulp. Let’s do it.

I will add a detail about John and me: perhaps it is the sailor in him, or the military background, or maybe because he is a guy. John can throw stuff in a duffle and be off in a jiffy.

I, however, am an anxious traveler and abysmal packer.

So, after Alexandra joined for the holidays, having driven from Austin with the assistance and companionship of Uncle Matt, dog Wes, and cat Bonnie, we savored the last weeks at Driftwood and spent time with Lauren and Ted and friends. John remained behind to button things up, and I drove with Alex back to Austin. This is where the adventure begins.
