About Heidi Coutu

Artist Heidi Coutu
In 1984, I left my day job and became a full-time artist. During the past 40 years of my working life as a painter, I have not shyed from change and from looking at subjects with a fresh eye. My collectors often comment that my work is so diverse greatly ranging in stylistic differences, varied subject matter, and intentional focus. In the art world this can be an unwelcome approach. I have chosen a path of pushing myself out of my comfort zone by exploring new media and taking an bold approach to a subject. My work ranges from nearly photo-realistic to completely abstracted . At a certain point, I gave myself permission to create this way. Sure, the marketplace and my need to make a living have influenced my choices, and I hope that people see consistency with my work. But there are no stale, regurgitated subjects that have hindered my creativity. Currently, I feel most comfortable working large and loose.
Here on my website you will see examples my distinct bodies of work. The challenges have to do with capturing the essence of a human with a portrait, bringing a landscape to life, or giving myelf permission to let go and express.
